The stop the drains coalition is making a public stand for environmental integrity and environmental accountability.

Stop the drains demands the Commonwealth Government and the SA State Government as a matter of urgency:

  • Cease any digging of new drains.

  • Implement a balanced and thorough, independent, whole of landscape, environmental audit covering the entire Upper South East Dryland Salinity and Flood Management Plan project area, funded by and reporting to all stakeholders in the USE Project.

  • Appoint to an Environmental Audit Committee people of impeccable national reputation who have no self-interest in the project area and whose expertise covers the range of disciplines required by the task.

  • Complete the USE Project according to the recommendations of the Environmental Audit Committee, preferably by December 2009.

Halt all digging of new drains.

Any works undertaken should address the erosion and maintenance problems of existing drains.
